West Calder Community community took over the running of this valuable building following cost cutting measures by West Lothian Council. Community Centres across Scotland are now facing a significant funding risk. COSLA (The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) is currently estimating a £1.2B funding gap across Scottish councils in 2026-27 with almost 2000 properties, including community centres and civic halls, being sold off between 2020 and 2024 to save costs.
Here are ways you can support this valuable community Asset!
West Calder Hub provides a wide range of services supporting the local community with low cost meals and activities for pensioners to reduce social isolation, providing space for kids and adult activities such as Taekwondo, Gymnastics and Yoga. The community café provides a venue for parents to meet, pensioners to get a decent meal and also hosts support services such as access to employment, dementia activities and carer support. The inexpensive community gym provides access to fitness facilities that would normally require travel by car or public transport to other areas.

​To better manage access for community groups and ensure the building is secure West Calder Hub are looking to raise funding to install electronic door locks to the building and individual rooms to support controlled community access to the facility.

The cost of installing a modern secure door entry system for the building is £22,000. This will reduce running costs for the community, improve access for legitimate groups and users and allow us to make the community gym available for extended periods through self access. We are looking to raise £10,000 locally and will be applying to the Rural Community Led Local Development Fund for match funding.
